Oni

Oni are infamous demons in Japanese folklore, often depicted as large, fearsome beings with horns, sharp claws, and wild hair. They are considered bringers of disaster and calamity, embodying evil spirits that torment humans. Traditionally, they are portrayed as brutish figures wielding large clubs, terrorizing villages and carrying away unfortunate souls. Some narratives present Oni as guardians or protectors, complicating their role in the folklore.

Legend

One famous legend tells of the Shoki, a demon-quelling hero, who defeated the Oni and reclaimed peace for the land. Oni are often depicted in the Setsubun festival, where roasted soybeans are thrown to ward off evil.
