Namahage

Namahage are ogre-like beings characterized by their fearsome masks and traditional clothing. During New Year festivities, they visit homes to frighten children into behaving well, emphasizing the importance of discipline. They symbolize the dual nature of fear and protection, encapsulating the spirit of local traditions.

Legend

Legend has it that a Namahage once saved a village from disaster, and thus, the ritual of their appearance became an integral part of Akita's New Year's celebrations, combining both reverence and fear.
