torii
Traditional gate marking the entrance to a sacred space.
Definition
The torii is a distinctive feature of Shinto shrine architecture, marking the transition from the secular to the sacred. Torii gates can be made from various materials, including wood and stone. Their design typically consists of two upright posts with two horizontal beams, one at the top and one partway down. There are several sub-types of torii, such as the shinmei-torii, myōjin-torii, ryōbu-torii, and miwa-torii, which reflect different regional styles and functions in Shinto worship.
Etymology
The term 'torii' is believed to derive from 'tori' (to take) and 'i' (dwelling), indicating a threshold to a sacred dwelling.
