Shinrikyō

A Shintō sect founded by Sano Tsunehiko centred on the kotodama and the divine principles of the universe.

Definition

Founded by Sano Tsunehiko (1834–1906), a hereditary priest of Kyūshū, who taught that the universe is governed by the underlying "divine principle" (shinri) revealed through the kotodama of the imperial Norito and the Five Cardinal Kami (Goshin). Recognised as one of the Thirteen Sects in 1894; today a small but active denomination headquartered in Kitakyūshū.
