Senge Takatomi, born in 1845, was the 80th priest of Izumo Taisha and a key figure in the establishment of State Shintō during the Meiji period. His contributions included supporting the 1868 Shinbutsu-bunri edict, which separated Buddhism from Shinto practices. He founded the Izumo-Ōyashiro-kyō, promoting revivalist interpretations of local deity worship within State Shintō. Takatomi's work laid the groundwork for the nationalizing efforts of Shinto, solidifying its role in the new imperial ideology.
