Definition

Kokugaku, or 'National Studies,' emerged during the Edo period as a scholarly movement focused on the study of Japanese classical texts, including the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. It played a pivotal role in the revival of Shinto thought and practice, advocating for the return to traditional Japanese values and spirituality. Prominent figures like Motoori Norinaga were instrumental in linking Kokugaku with the ideological foundations of Fukko Shintō, emphasizing the significance of inheritance from ancient wisdom for contemporary religious life.

The word '国学' means 'national learning,' underscoring a return to native traditions and philosophies.
