Jikkōkyō

A second Mt Fuji–centred Shintō sect that split from the Fujikō tradition, recognised as an independent denomination in 1882.

Definition

Founded by Shibata Hanamori (1809–1890) in 1873 as a reformist branch of the Edo-period Fujikō movement, emphasising "actual practice" (jikkō) — daily ethical conduct, agricultural diligence, and bodily purification at Mt Fuji’s sacred springs — over speculative theology. Counted among the Thirteen Sects from 1882, headquartered in Tokyo with practice centres around the Fuji Five Lakes.

Etymology

jikkō ("practice, actual conduct") + kyō
