Izumo Ōyashirokyō
The lay confraternal sect (recognised 1882) that propagates the worship of Ōkuninushi of Izumo Taisha throughout Japan.
Definition
Reorganised in 1873 by the chief priest of Izumo Taisha, Senge Takatomi, from the older Ōyashiro-kō pilgrimage associations. The sect propagates the worship of Ōkuninushi-no-Ōkami (Ōnamuchi) as the kami of marriage-bonds (en-musubi) and the unseen world (kakuriyo). Its theology of the parallel "visible" (utsushiyo) and "hidden" (kakuriyo) realms distinguishes it from Ise-centred Shintō.
Etymology
Izumo Ōyashiro ("Great Shrine of Izumo") + kyō
