Yaoundé Shizen-no-Mori Hokora

The 'Natural Forest Hokora' (a hokora is a small roadside or outdoor shrine) in Yaoundé is a nature-worship sacred space established within a community forest garden by Japanese volunteers working in Cameroon's environmental sector. Rather than a full jinja complex, it follows the hokora tradition — a modest outdoor altar — honoring Kōjin (deity of fire, hearth, and earth) and Satohime (a female deity of the cultivated land). The shrine reflects a Shinto understanding of nature's sanctity (kannagara) that harmonizes organically with central African forest spirituality.
