Dar es Salaam Umi-no-Kami Hokora
Established by Japanese fishing industry workers and JICA volunteers at Tanzania's principal port city on the Indian Ocean, the Umi-no-Kami ('Ocean Deity') Hokora honors Watatsumi — the great sea-kami — and the three Sumiyoshi deities, traditional patrons of seafarers and maritime safety. Dar es Salaam ('Haven of Peace' in Arabic) proved a fitting location for a shrine of oceanic protection. Offerings of salt, fish, and sea-water are made at the stone altar, and the annual maritime blessing ceremony in the monsoon season has attracted participation from local Swahili fishing communities.
Notable for
Maritime protection shrine on the Indian Ocean coast; annual sea-blessing (umi-mairi) ceremony held at the monsoon season draws both Japanese and Swahili fishing community participants.
