Abuja Kunitama Shrine

The Kunitama Shrine in Nigeria's capital was established by a Japanese Shinto practitioner working with a local cultural exchange NGO. The shrine honors Ōkuninushi, the great builder-deity who constructed the earthly realm in Shinto mythology, and his son Kotoshironushi, associated with oracular wisdom. The founders deliberately chose these deities for a shrine on the African continent, drawing on Ōkuninushi's mythology of peaceful land-building and inter-cultural cooperation as emblematic of Japan's developmental engagement with Nigeria.

Notable for

Founded with explicit reference to Ōkuninushi's mythology of cooperative nation-building; one of West Africa's only documented Shinto sacred spaces.
