What Is Tsumi?
Tsumi is obstruction, disorder, or pollution that disrupts harmony and calls for cleansing.
Tsumi is often translated as sin, but that translation can mislead English readers. In Shinto, tsumi is not always the same as moral guilt in the Christian sense. It can refer to obstruction, disorder, pollution, or a condition that disrupts harmony with life and the kami.
Tsumi requires purification because it blocks the proper flow of life. It is not solved by shame. It is addressed through cleansing, sincerity, correction, and return.
Esoteric Shinto Healing Arts treats tsumi as part of the broader purification path. The question is not, “How guilty am I?” The question is, “What must be cleansed so harmony can return?”
